چکیده

Geometric problems originating in architecture can lead to interesting research and results in geometry processing, computer aided geometric design, and discrete differential geometry. In this article we survey this development and consider an important problem of this kind: Discrete surfaces (meshes) which admit a multi-layered geometric support structure. It turns out that such meshes can be elegantly studied via the concept of parallel mesh. Discrete versions of the network of principal curvature lines turn out to be parallel to approximately spherical meshes. Both circular meshes and the conical meshes considered only recently are instances of this meta-theorem. We dicuss properties and interrelations of circular and conical meshes, and also their connections to meshes in static equilibrium and discrete minimal surfaces. We conclude with a list of research problems in geometry which are related to architectural design.

Smooth surfaces from bilinear patches: Discrete affine minimal surfaces☆

Motivated by applications in freeform architecture, we study surfaces which are composed of smoothly joined bilinear patches. These surfaces turn out to be discrete versions of negatively curved affine minimal surfaces and share many properties with their classical smooth counterparts. We present computational design approaches and study special cases which should be interesting for the archite...

On Vertex Offsets of Polyhedral Surfaces

Planar-faced mesh surfaces, also known as polyhedral surfaces, that possess vertex-offsets are useful in architectural design for constructing supporting structures, and also of interest in discrete differential geometry. We consider the existence and computation of vertex-offset meshes of general polyhedral surfaces and, specifically, study how the existence of vertex offsets is dictated by th...

LAR-ABC, a representation of architectural geometry From concept of spaces, to design of building fabric, to construction simulation

This paper discusses the application of LAR (Linear Algebraic Representation) scheme to the architectural design process. LAR is a novel representation scheme for geometric design of curves, surfaces and solids, using simple, general and well founded concepts from algebraic topology [Dicarlo et al. 2014]. LAR supports all topological incidence structures, including enumerative (images), decompo...

Learning from experience in the engineering of non-orthogonal architectural surfaces : a computational design system

This research paints a comprehensive picture of the current state of the conception and engineering of non-orthogonal architectural surfaces. The present paradigm in the design and engineering of these elaborate building structures is such that the overall form is decided first and it is then broken down into building components (façade cladding, or structural or shell elements) retrospectively...

Geometry of Multi-layer Freeform Structures for Architecture

The geometric challenges in the architectural design of freeform shapes come mainly from the physical realization of beams and nodes in singleand multilayer constructions. The present paper approaches arising geometric problems via the concept of parallel meshes. It presents results which form the basis for computation and optimization. We discuss planar faces, beams of controlled height, geome...
